Traditional Chinese Medicine for Darling Point
Josephine treats a wide variety of issues, including acute muscle pains and also more complex health conditions that may have accompanied a patient for many years.
Your first visit will usually include a consultation similar to that of visiting your GP in a private consultation room, where you can discuss your health concerns and the reason for your visit.
You will also be asked a series of questions in relation to your health to gain a clear picture of your past and present health condition. Diagnostic techniques used by a TCM practitioner will usually include checking your pulse and observation of your tongue.
Shen is the third of the Three Treasures in TCM and is typically translated as "spirit" or "mind." It encompasses consciousness, mental activity, emotional life, memory, sleep, and the overall vitality visible in a person's eyes and demeanour. A person with strong Shen appears alert, present, and emotionally balanced, with bright, clear eyes. Disturbed Shen may manifest as anxiety, insomnia, poor concentration, muddled thinking, or in severe cases, mania or delirium.
In TCM theory, Shen is housed in the Heart and relies on adequate Heart Blood and Heart Yin to remain calm and anchored. When Blood or Yin becomes deficient, Shen loses its residence and becomes unsettled — leading to restlessness, dream-disturbed sleep, and emotional volatility. The relationship between Shen and the Heart is why emotional disorders are frequently treated through the Heart meridian in acupuncture.
Assessing Shen is one of the first things a TCM practitioner does during consultation, as it provides immediate insight into the patient's overall vitality and prognosis. Strong Shen, even in a seriously ill patient, is considered a positive prognostic sign.
Shen refers to the spirit, mind, and consciousness in TCM. It encompasses mental clarity, emotional stability, awareness, and the sparkle of vitality visible in someone's eyes. Shen is housed in the Heart and depends on adequate Blood and Yin for stability.
Practitioners assess Shen by observing the patient's eyes (clarity, brightness, focus), complexion, speech coherence, emotional state, and overall presence. Strong Shen is indicated by alert, engaged eyes and clear thinking. Weak or disturbed Shen shows as dull eyes, confusion, anxiety, or emotional instability.
